Roomba 805 vs 980: iAdapt-Based Robotic Vacs with Multi-Surface Brushes

For this Roomba 805 vs 980 review, I tested two models that belong to different price ranges (the 805 is cheaper), but still are both supplied with iRobot's top features. For example, a 3-stage cleaning, iAdapt navigation system, a full set of smart sensors, and others. However, like all the budget Roombas, the 805 moves in a random pattern which causes it to miss some areas when cleaning. The 980, in its term, has a logic-based pattern, and therefore covers all the floor surface.

Suction and dustbin capacity

In terms of suction power, the 980 is unquestionably a more powerful model. With 1670 Pa, it easily outperforms the 805 with its 600 Pa. Nevertheless, when it comes to dustbin capacity, there is nothing to compare because both cleaners are equally capable of holding up to 600ml of dirt.

Using area

Comparing Roomba 980 vs 805 using area, you immediately see that the 805 wasn't designed to perform cleaning in large spaces. The 1000 square feet floor coverage is pretty standard for most budget cleaners from the Roomba line. The 980, which using area is specified as 1900 square feet, will be a great choice for people who live in large houses or apartments.

Noise level

The noise test revealed that the 980 is slightly noisier than the 700: 68 dB versus 70 dB. However, this distinction is barely discernible: the noise levels of both cleaners are comparable to city traffic.

Carpet cleaning

Testing iRobot Roomba 805 vs 980 carpet cleaning capability, I was impressed by the 980's performance. Its dual multi-surface brushes, along with remarkable suction power, clean high-pile carpets very well and require no maintenance because they are tangle-free. Despite the fact that the 805 has the same brushes, its limited suction power doesn't allow it to work efficiently on thick carpets, but with low-pile ones, it deals great.

Roomba 805 Pros & Cons

Pros

  • It comes with two virtual wall barriers.
  • There is an anti-tangle indicator on the unit's faceplate.
  • You can schedule the 805 to perform cleaning up to 7 times per week.

Cons

  • App control is not possible with this device.
  • Hair that is too long gets stuck in the rollers.

Roomba 980 Pros & Cons

Pros

  • The cleaner may be controlled from your phone or tablet using the iRobot Home app.
  • It can be integrated with Alexa or Google Assistant smart device for voice control.
  • The device features a powerful battery that lasts roughly 2 hours when fully charged.

Cons

  • The top surface is glossy and therefore easily gets scratched.
  • The onboard LED indicators are small and dim.
