Both the Roomba 960 and 880 belong to the same iRobot’s line, being mid-priced round-shaped models, so it may be hard to decide right away which one is better. They both have auto charging and multi-room cleaning and go with the same high-efficiency filter which captures allergen, traps dust and small particles.
However, if you compare Roomba 960 vs 880 in terms of their design, you will notice that they look different. The Roomba 960 is more minimalistic while the Roomba 880 provides more onboard controls. They have different battery capacity: the Roomba 880 runs for 90 minutes on a single charge, and its competitor has 75 minutes of working time.
The cleaners have almost similar dustbin capacity, but the Roomba 960 has 100ml bigger dustbin (750ml versus 650ml). In terms of suctions power, the Roomba 880 is only 100 Pa more powerful than the Roomba 960 (1000 Pa versus 900 Pa).
The using area of the models doesn’t differ much, but if you have a big house, opt for the Roomba 880 which covers the area of 1700 square feet. Its competitor with 1500 square feet using area isn’t far behind, but you still can see the difference.
By comparing the Roomba 880 vs 960 by the level of noise make during operation, it’s hard to notice the difference at once. Nevertheless, with more thorough comparison, you can hear that the Roomba 960 works quieter. Although I wouldn't say that the other model is noisy, still, there is a slight difference.
If we match the iRobot 880 vs 960 carpet cleaning feature, I can assert that they both perform on carpets decently. However, my choice here falls on the Roomba 960: its rubber brushes come in close contact even with high-pile carpets and grab more dirt and pet hair.
