Roomba 770 versus 780: Virtual Walls vs Virtual Lighthouses
The major difference between the Roomba 770 versus 780 is that the 770 uses virtual walls, while the 780 uses virtual lighthouses that confine it in an area and inform the robot when to move to another room. Another key difference in Roomba 770 or 780 models is that the 770 uses physical buttons while the 780 sports touchpad controls.
Suction and dustbin capacity
Comparing the dustbin capacity of the Roomba 780 vs Roomba 770 reveals that the older 770 model has a bigger dustbin capacity than the new 780. The 780 features a 0.5-liter dustbin capacity, while the 770 has a dustbin capacity of 0.2-liter. However, both models lack suction power for properly vacuuming high or medium-pile carpets.
Using area
There is a slight difference between the 770 vs 780 when it comes to the area of use. The 770 model covers an area of 1200 square feet and has advanced dirt detection that cleans hard-to-reach areas under tables and furniture. Whereas the 780 has an area of 1300 square feet.
Noise level
After the Roomba 780 or 770 cleaned my apartment for about 90 minutes, I noticed the 770 model operates at 69.33 decibels, while the 780 model operates at 72 decibels. Their noise level is moderate and not as loud as a washing machine.
Carpet Cleaning
Having tested the 770 or 780, I discovered the 770 could not handle switching from cleaning hardwood floors to high-pile carpets. However, it was able to clean normal carpets and doormats with ease. But the 780 could clean carpets with medium fibers, yet could not handle thick carpets.
