Singer definitely knows how to make classic, easy-to-use sewing machines for beginners. The Singer 1304 has everything to be called a nearly perfect model for starting seamstresses. This electric model is compact, inexpensive, has a limited number of controls, and offers a basic set of functions.
This lightweight sewing machine weighs only 7 pounds, so one can lift it with one hand without any problems. You can also take it with you when you travel. The size of this model, 13 x 7 x 11.5 inches, demonstrates its portability.
Singer has many small, traditional, non-complicated sewing machines in its range (the Singer Tradition 2277, for example). However, particularly this model is designed specifically for starters (its full name is the Singer Start 1304).
There are only 6 built-in stitches, but it's still sufficient for basic needs such as clothing repair, tailoring, and so on. The stitch selector is large and turns smoothly, making switching between stitch designs simple and quick. The stitch width is 5mm and, unfortunately, you won't be able to change it.
Despite its simplicity and small size, the machine can handle thick fabrics if you use the right needle. Those needles that come with the 1304 aren't heavy-duty and will quickly break if you use them on tough materials.
Prior to conducting my test for this Singer 1304 review, I discovered that this model is very easy to set up. All you have to do now is plug it in and attach the foot pedal, and the 1304 is ready to use. No assembly is needed, and the tension is perfect right out of the box. However, when it comes to usage, it's mostly a manual model. There isn't even an automatic needle threader on it.
In the dedicated accessory tray compartment, all of the included accessories are neatly hidden. There are 3 extra bobbins, 3 needles, 3 presser feet (all-purpose, buttonhole for making 4-step manual buttonholes and zipper), etc. A printed manual was not included in my box.
If you're not used to sewing quickly, the Singer 1304 is a good choice because its max speed is only 400 SPM. There is no speed control, so the amount of pressure applied to the pedal is the only way to change it.
If you don’t have any specific requirements for a sewing machine, this one will do well for basic sewing needs. However, it lacks modern features that would make it more convenient to use, so I give it an 8 out of 10 rating.
The design of this machine is exceptionally minimalistic. The stitch selection dial is located near the center of the face panel. The reverse lever can be found a little lower. On the right side of the unit, there is a lever that lifts and lowers the needle. The LED light that illuminates the sewing area is present as well.
The interior frame of the Singer 1304 sewing machine is entirely made of metal. This ensures durability, stability, and consistent stitches. Plus, thanks to such sturdy construction, the machine operates quietly due to the absence of vibrations.
The design is a 10/10 for me since it's simple and reliable.
The Singer sewing machine 1304 is a classic, straightforward to use and install sewing machine that will work great for beginners. Although the lack of automatic features may be considered a significant disadvantage. In addition, if you are an experienced sewist, you won't get too much profit from this machine.
